Apostolic Perspectives: The Tragedy of Living Safe

February 20th, 2008 · No Comments · Apostolic Perspectives

Living UnfulfilledThere is something in the fallen nature that is searching for security and comfort. If we would be honest with ourselves we would probably discover that this desire is rooted in fear and actually works against the lifestyle of faith that we are called to live as the saints of God.

Faith demands that our security be found in God alone. God has not called us to life safe and comfortable (at least by our own estimations and criteria). Fulfilling the purposes for which we have been created is the only way that we can truly experience life to the fullest. To borrow a phrase from a well known author, “The world needs you fully alive!”

For the Israelites, Egypt was safe and predictable. It was also a place of captivity and cruel taskmasters. Though the vision and promise of Canaan surely guaranteed freedom, it also created a high level of insecurity because it would require trust in the God that was leading them and a venture into the unknown to become reality. To obtain the liberty they desired, they would have to first confront the fears that kept them where they were.

There was a group that came out (of slavery), but never fully entered in (to freedom). The Israel that left Egypt was not the same Israel that crossed over into the land of promise. It would take an entirely new generation that did not know slavery to be able to enter the land and possess the inheritance. They could not enter in body what they could not enter in heart and mind first. Therefore, they fell in the wilderness with their promises within reach.

Don’t die comfortable, die fulfilled.

“Now the just shall live by faith: but if any man draw back, my soul shall have no pleasure in him. But we are not of them who draw back unto perdition; but of them that believe to the saving of the soul.” (Hebrews 10:38, 39)
