We all know that heaven is full of the glory of God, but what about down here on earth? The prophetic book of Habakkuk states that, “the earth shall be filled with the glory of the Lord as the waters cover the sea.” (2:14) Then, in John 17:4, as Jesus prayed to the Father, He said, “I have glorified you down here on the earth…”
There are things that we can do every day to honor and glorify God through the way that we live. As we do, we are bringing glory to Him here on the earth.
The following list descibes nine ways that we can glorify to God through our lifestyle:
Complete the work that He has given you to do. (John 17:4) Each of us has been apportioned general and specific assignments to carry out in this life. Our “high calling” has to be discovered and intentionally pursued or it will die within us as unrealized potential. Glorify God by fulfilling the purposes for which you have been created.
Bear fruit as a disciple. (John 15:8) Our lives should be filled with “evidences” of the new nature within us. As we grow in faith, we are renewed in our thinking and progressively begin to express the character of God. “But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control.” (Galatians 5:22, 23)
Maintain a thankful heart. (Romans 1:21) In our current, prosperous, consumer-oriented lifestyles, it is easy to become self-focused, always desiring more but never reaching a place of contentment. We should never lose sight of our greatest possession - salvation that comes through a relationship with Jesus! This should be the realization that keeps us in a constant state of thankfulness, maintaining the peace of God that surrounds our hearts. Condition yourself to thank God for something throughout the day!
Follow God in faith. (Romans 4:20) Many times the way God leads us seems illogical and contradictory. To follow Him completely we have to suspend intellectual reasoning and simply trust. I keep remembering how Abraham obeyed God even if it meant sacrificing the promise that he had waited so long to see fulfilled. God was pleased and his act was counted for righteousness and he earned the reputation as our “father of faith.”
Suffer with Christ. (Romans 8:17) This is not a great crowd-gathering message, but nonetheless a scriptural example. Notice that it says suffering with Christ. There is a suffering that leads to redemption and life. In Colossians 1:24 Paul stated, “Now I rejoice in the midst of my sufferings on your behalf. And in my own person I am making up whatever is still lacking and remains to be completed of Christ’s afflictions, for the sake of His body, which is the church.” He was willing to bear discomfort and hardship in his body for the benefit of the Body of Christ. What gave him the strength to persevere was the understanding that there would be a corresponding glory that would be revealed according to level of suffering endured.
Tomorrow we will complete the list. Be blessed!
