Why Things Don’t Change

June 4th, 2009 · 1 Comment · Spiritual Growth and Development

Some recent meditations concerning “change” have brought me to a few conclusions that I wanted to share:

Things don’t change because we still have some maturing to do. Outward change in our life always follows the inner transformations of the heart that come through adjustments in our thoughts and beliefs.

Things don’t change because God won’t allow it. Thankfully, God keeps some doors shut until the appointed time. His grace is sufficient to keep us wherever it takes us if we will stay within the parameters of it.

Things don’t change because it is not the appointed time or season. Kingdom growth is “line upon line” and “precept upon precept.” There are certain things that need to be accomplished in a specific order before we can move into higher things.

Things don’t change because of unrealistic expectations. Unrealistic expectations are the number one source of frustration. Sometimes we have a distorted perception of what the situation should look like or the way we think God should do things on our behalf. As we maintain faithfulness and obedience our expectations can be adjuted to better fit His will for us for the moment.

Things don’t change because we are afraid. Fear is the greatest incapacitator of faith. Many times we would rather stay in the familiarity of our dysfunction rather than face the necessary insecurity of a better yet unknown possibility.

“In times of change learners inherit the earth; while the learned find themselves beautifully equipped to deal with a world that no longer exists.” (Eric Hoffer)
